01 June 2021: Jake Carter, winner of Dancing with the Stars, has stars in his eyes for Cavapoo, Lenny. Jake and Lenny are taking part in ‘Paws for a Cause’, Family Carers Ireland’s national fundraising initiative to support carers in crisis during National Carers Week 7 – 13th June 2021.
Jake and Lenny are asking people all over Ireland to join them and walk or run 24k over 7 days in solidarity with Ireland’s 500,000 family carers and in recognition of the 24/7 nature of many caring roles.
A hardship fund established in 2020 at the height of the pandemic to help family carers in crisis has run out of money due to the demands for help from those struggling mentally, physically, and financially. All monies raised by ‘Paws for a Cause’ will go directly to help family carers in crisis.
Jake Carter said “Family carers are our unsung heroes; they need our support, and I am appealing to everyone to get behind this great cause. Whether you have a dog or not, get out for a walk during National Carers Week and register at www.familycarers.ie.”
Catherine Cox, Head of Communications and Policy, Family Carers Ireland welcomed Jake’s support saying “The last twelve months have been incredibly difficult for all but, in particular for family carers who saw services and supports for their loved ones depleted and, in many cases, eradicated. We are delighted to have Jake and Lenny’s support and we hope this inspires and encourages others to sign up and get walking for this wonderful cause.”
“National Carers Week runs from 7 – 13th June and is a time to celebrate family carers in our community by acknowledging their significant contribution providing support to loved ones who requires care. This National Carers Week is perhaps the most important one so far as it gives us the opportunity to shine a light on what family carers do, and to celebrate the life changing impact they have on the lives of so many.”
Throughout National Carers Week, Family Carers Ireland will be hosting a series of online events to support the health and wellbeing of family carers. The events include bingo, yoga, Zumba, virtual coffee sessions and a quiz night, along with information sessions and much much more. Full details are available on www.familycarers.ie.
