Patient Moving and Handling

The Physical, Mental and Psychological Impact of Caring, published in 2019 following a collaboration between Family Carers Ireland, College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems, found that despite the risk of physical injury, less than 1 in 5 (18%) carers received training for their role. Four in 10 carers have suffered from back injuries, and almost two-thirds (67%) of these felt their back injury was caused or made worse because of their caring role. Manual handling training was the most common training need identified when carers were asked what training they would like to receive.

Family Carers Ireland are offering family carers an opportunity to participate in our Patient Moving and Handling one day courses. The course itself is designed to enable family carers to recognise and prevent back injuries that are brought about by poor lifting and moving techniques.
