Thursday 5th October 2023: Family Carers Ireland, the national charity supporting Ireland’s 500,000+ family carers, is celebrating European Carers Day on Friday, October 6th, 2023. This annual event serves as a poignant reminder of the vital, yet often hidden, work of family carers. The focus of European Carers Day 2023 is raising awareness about the crucial need for work-life-care balance for family carers across Europe and ensuring all of those who provide care at home are properly supported.

In a mark of solidarity with Ireland’s family carers, a collection of the country’s most iconic landmarks will be lit up in gold including the Phoenix Monument, the Wolfe Tone Monument, Casino Marino, the Rock of Cashel, and the Yellow Steeple.

European Carers Day 2023 holds special significance as it seeks to shine a light on those who balance caregiving at home with their careers. Family Carers Ireland is thrilled to have the support of Bank of Ireland, Irish Rail, Irish Life, and AIB, all members of the charity's Caring Employers program. They will illuminate significant locations, including College Green, Heuston Station, Athlone Railway Bridge, Irish Life Plaza and Northumberland Square, and AIB Molesworth Street, showcasing their commitment to supporting their caring colleagues.

"This European Carers Day is about creating a more inclusive and compassionate society that empowers family carers and values the importance of balance in their work-life-care journey," said Catherine Cox, Head of Communications and Policy at Family Carers Ireland.

“In Ireland, one in nine people juggle care in the home with paid employment. We believe that every individual, regardless of their caring responsibilities, deserves the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life. Along with our EUROCARERS colleagues, we are calling for comprehensive care policies, public awareness and recognition of family carers, financial empowerment, supportive workplaces and ultimately, a society that acknowledges the value of balancing work, life and care.

“Lighting up some of Ireland’s major landmarks in gold represents an important acknowledgement of the essential work undertaken by family carers who go above and beyond for their loved ones each day.

"The support of Bank of Ireland, Irish Rail, Irish Life, AIB and the OPW is invaluable in highlighting the importance of recognising and supporting family carers. Their commitment to shining a light on the vital work of family carers sends a clear message of solidarity."

Dave Hyland, Operations Manager, Bank of Ireland said: “I deeply appreciate the significance of this gesture. It's a heartfelt reminder that we are not invisible. I’d walk a million miles for one of my son’s smiles, I’m his Dad and his carer, but being seen and supported by our colleagues is vital in terms of fostering an inclusive and compassionate workplace.

"It sends a message that family carers are not alone in their journey.”
