Family Carers Ireland is dedicated to developing and supporting research that has relevance and meaning for family carers, research that influences social policy and enhances the quality of life of family carers and the people they care for.
Family Carers Ireland has developed key partnerships and relationships with academic institutions in Ireland and internationally to build strong networks. These institutions include University College Dublin, University College Cork, Dublin City University, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, College of Psychiatrists of Ireland and IT Sligo.
We support carer-related research in the following ways:
We are currently involved in research studies ranging in topics from SMART technology in the home to working carers. If you would like to speak with Family Carers Ireland about collaborating on a research project, please contact Dr Nikki Dunne (ndunne@familycarers.ie).
Family Carers Ireland is dedicated to shining a light on the realities of caring. One way of doing this is to partner with groups including academic and research institutions and other charities. Our published research reports and briefing papers are available below.

DownloadFamily carers are experts in their own lives and their own experiences and can bring unique insights which are valuable for research. It is vital that the views and opinions of family carers are taken into account in all areas of research involving family carers, at a national and international level.
To ensure that carers’ unique insights are included in research projects from the earliest stages, Family Carers Ireland are in the process of setting up a ‘Family Carers Research Advisory Network’ – a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) network of family carers who will influence, advise and work with researchers advising on research projects or carrying out research that involve family carers.
In general, PPI in research means research carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. It is not about collecting data, but about offering advice, insights, and contributing to research projects in the same way other collaborators would.
If you are a researcher and would like to engage with members of the Family Carers Research Advisory Network, please complete this form and return it to ndunne@family carers.ie.
