Dementia Care and Support

Irish Times Training, led by their Head of Programmes Alison McKeon, are very proud to partner with Family Carers Ireland and Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) to deliver the upcoming Dementia Care and Support QQI Level 5 Special Purpose Certificate for family carers, which is approved by the HSE and is fully funded.

A public information session for anyone interested in applying to take part in the programme will take place online on April 5th and all are welcome to attend. To register for this event, please contact Deirdre Geoghegan by email at training@familycarers.ie or by phone at 086 7749838.

Taking place in six units, including face-to-face workshops and phone calls with tutors, the programme starts on April 16th in Tullamore.

The programme will support those who are caring for family members living with dementia with humanity, empathy and dignity, so that they may live well for longer in their own homes and communities.

“We understand that caring for a family member with dementia, while deeply rewarding, can be very challenging. All the partners who created this workshop were keen to bring their expertise and experience into the mix to support family carers to take care of those they love, and themselves. Around two-thirds of people in Ireland with dementia today are cared for at home, so giving them and their carers all the support they need is a top priority. In creating this programme, we have worked with the National Dementia Office to provide carers with vital support.”

Alison McKeon, Head of Programmes, Irish Times Training

The National Dementia Strategy, which is being implemented by the National Dementia Office, sets out the vision that any person living with dementia and their family carers should receive the supports and services they need to fulfil their potential and to maintain their identity, resilience, and dignity as valued and active citizens in society.

In tandem with the strategy, the newly accredited Dementia Care programme is being rolled out to healthcare assistants nationwide in 2024 by Irish Times Training for the HSE and the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland.

To secure your space on this programme in April, please contact Deirdre Geoghegan by email at training@familycarers.ie or by phone at 086 7749838.
